Crackdown on cricket bookies

Mumbai Feb. 12. In a stepped-up crackdown on cricket bookies who have become more active after the beginning of the World Cup, the Crime Branch here arrested nine bookies last night on the eve of the India-Holland match and seized telephones, television sets, cellphones and computers from them.

While Unit II of the Crime Branch arrested two persons from the Gulalwadi area in south Mumbai here, their counterparts of Unit IX arrested seven persons from two different places in the western suburb of Malad.

The co-ordinated raids were carried out following tip-offs to the special teams operating directly under the supervision of the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Shridhar Vagal, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection), Pradeep Sawant, senior police officials said.
