Mr. Dey, who attended the concluding session of the sixth national conference of the Trade Union Coordination Centre (TUCC), said that West Bengal was the first State to have introduced such a programme to benefit employees affected by the liberalisation. Mr. Dey belongs to Forward Block. D.Devarajan of the TUCC said that care had been taken by the West Bengal Government not to close down State public sector undertakings. He urged the Centre to come out of the WTO. The conference demanded a White Paper on the economic situation in the country. Mr. Devarajan said that in future the Government should take Parliament's approval before signing any agreement with the international organisations such as the WTO, as they affect millions of people. The new Secretary of the centre, G.R.Shivashankar, said the TUCC planned to organise a "Parliament march" on February 26 to highlight the "anti-labour" policies of the Centre. The CITU, the AITUC, and the HMS had extended support to the agitation, he said. The General Secretary of the TUCC, Sham Charan Gaur, and the Secretary, Sudhangshu Ghose, were present.
