The arrangement will see Ucal Fuel Systems, a joint venture with Mikuni of Japan, ready with a tested technology much before new and stricter emission norms are in place in 2005. Given the current technology, the two-stroke two-wheelers would not be able to pass the muster once these norms were in place, it was pointed out. Hence, Ucal scouted for a new technology and found one in Orbital. Official sources at Ucal explained that Oribital was a pioneer in direct injection combustion technology and that a tie up with it would obviate the need for junking 2-stroke 2-wheelers once the new norm was in place by 2005. While declining to divulge the financial implications of the arrangement with the Australian company, sources said the `advent of a new technology' would obviously result in not just the `tinkering' of an assembly line but a host of changes "in related things''. A release from the company said the alliance with Orbital would facilitate "Ucal to become a system integrator and service provider for implementing the Orbital combustion technology on the Indian vehicles.'' Already, some locally-made vehicles with two-stroke engines are through trials in Orbital to optimise the systems. Synerject, a joint venture between Orbital and Siemens VDO, would be the company that will transfer technology for setting up manufacturing capabilities for system components such as compressor, throttle body assembly, and fuel rail assembly.
