Move to improve facilities in Social Welfare Dept. hostels

By Our Staff Reporter

Bangalore Feb. 15. The State Government has made a proposal to the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to provide hostels run by the Social Welfare Department with facilities such as computer, library, gas stove, and solar water heaters.

The Social Welfare Minister, A. Krishnappa, who has been making visits to New Delhi to follow up the projects proposed by the State, today told presspersons that he had convinced the Union Government about the need to provide these facilities for the benefit of the students from the downtrodden sections.

Mr. Krishnappa said that the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, which showed keen interest in the State's proposal, had assured him that it would be considered seriously.

Mr. Krishnappa, who will be visiting Delhi in the first week of March on a similar exercise, said he was expecting Rs. 30 crore for training students who were planning to appear for IAS, IPS, and KAS examinations.

He said that tutors would be appointed to teach mathematics, English, and science to the hostellers up to the secondary level as most of them found these subjects difficult. He had directed all zilla panchayat chief executive officers, deputy commissioners, and municipal commissioners to appoint a nodal officer for each hostel to monitor the improvement of quality.

The department had recruited a large number of cooks, watchmen, wardens, and other staff to run the hostels, and this had helped bring a semblance of discipline and work culture.

On the substandard quality of foodgrains supplied by the Food Corporation of India to the hostels, the minister said he had asked the wardens to return such foodgrains to the deputy commissioner. The matter would be brought to the notice of the FCI officials.
