The Minister said in an official statement that the new department had been formed in the context of the need to coordinate consumer problems and other activities related to creating consumer awareness. The setting up of a separate department for consumer affairs would go a long way in effectively dealing with consumer problems. He said that the new department would give priority to consumer awareness programmes not only in urban centres, but also in the rural and remote areas of the State. The onsumer awareness programme would be launched in Kozhikode on March 15, which would be observed as International Consumer Day.
