Water release termed a gimmick

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Feb. 15. The Forum for Utilisation of Godavari waters has taken exception to the release of water on an `experimental basis' to two distributaries of Kakatiya Canal in Warangal by the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Thursday and said it was unfortunate that water should have been let out when the position in the Lower Manair balancing reservoir itself was bad.

Speaking to newsmen here on Saturday, the forum Chairman and former Congress minister, M. Sashidhar Reddy, said the release of water was "a publicity and political stunt'' of the Chief Minister.

Mr. Reddy also found fault with Mr. Naidu disowning a statement to complete the Devadula lift-irrigation scheme on the Godavari in Warangal by the end of this year and said it exposed "the true colours of the Government. It was not serious about the backwardness of Telangana, he said.

He added that the Government allocated mere Rs. 50 crores for the scheme in the budget for the next financial year which meant it required 36 years to complete the project at this rate of funding. The project cost was Rs. 1,800 crores.
