Probe Neeru-meeru fiasco: CPI

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Feb. 15. Criticising the Government for what it said wasting huge amounts for fancy programmes like Neeru-meeru, the State council of the CPI has demanded that the Government constitute an expert committee to study the implementation of the programme and results accrued by it.

The CPI state council which met here under the chairmanship of A.V Gopala Rao on February 13 and 14 accused the Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, of taking up the programme only for gaining publicity. While the Government which spent Rs 1,400 crores in the name of Neeru-meeru claimed that water levels would increase substantially, the results proved otherwise which was even confirmed by the findings of none other than the Chief Minister. In view of this, the Government should order an enquiry by an expert committee into the programme, the CPI demanded.

Referring to the Government's reported moves to entrust the maintenance of power sub-stations to private parties, the CPI State council opined that the move would only give scope for private armies to take control over the things. Instead of contemplating such things, the Government should take up drought relief works on a war-footing to prevent the large-scale migration of people in drought-hit districts.

On the recent agreement between the management and workers of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited, the CPI alleged that despite an assurance in the agreement, the management was resorting to victimisation of employees by denying them work. The SCCL management was also reportedly indulging in unfair trade practices by luring persons instrumental in breaking the strike with special pay packages.

According to a press release, the meeting also expressed concern over the proposed merger of Hospet, Bellari and other stations, presently in the Guntakal division, with the Hubli division as the move would help reduce the prominence of the Guntakal division.
