U.S. trying to win over Pakistan

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD FEB. 16. Even after the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, conveyed to the United States President, George W. Bush, that war against Iraq was not a "good option", Washington is working on Islamabad to change its stance.

The U.S. Ambassador in Pakistan, Nancy Powell, called on the Pakistan Foreign Minister, Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri, on Friday to solicit Islamabad's support for a possible resolution in the Security Council, authorising military strike against Iraq, the Dawn said in a front-page report today. The meeting is being seen as part of a concerted U.S. effort to "convince" Pakistan to support Washington on Iraq. Quoting official sources, the paper said Ms. Powell's visit had been prompted by Pakistan's stand on any unilateral action against Iraq. The U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, discussed the issue with Mr. Kasuri on telephone.
