Left decries Centre's move

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI FEB. 16. The Left parties today strongly disapproved the way the Vajpayee Government moved the Supreme Court to facilitate the VHP-RSS start the construction of temple at Ayodhya.

"By this act, the Government has actually bypassed Parliament which has enacted the law to take over the land around the disputed site at Ayodhya'', the Left parties said adding they would raise the issue during the Budget session starting here tomorrow.

The Left party leaders who met here to coordinate on issues that would be taken up by them in Parliament, said in a statement that there was a "cynical attempt by the government to communalise the atmosphere every time elections are round the corner by legitimising the VHP's effort to whip up emotion''. They said the Left would coordinate with all secular parties to oppose the diabolic move.

The parties also decided to raise the impending U.S. action against Iraq, and economic issues including poor growth, disinvestment of public sector undertakings, problems in agriculture, proposed labour reforms and Central-State fiscal problems.

On Iraq, the Left parties suggested that the Vajpayee Government take a more pro-active role since the war would not only be disastrous for Iraq but would also have an impact on expatriate Indians working in the Gulf region. Referring to economic issues, the parties charged that the Government was trying to divert the attention of the people from the grim economic situation marked by a negative growth of employment and the controversy over the way poverty is defined.

The meeting also strongly protested against the way the government was going ahead with the privatisation of BPCL/HPCL and would highlight the growing opposition to the move.

They charged that it was `clearly against the nation's strategic interest and intended to benefit certain corporates. The Left leaders expressed concern over the Government attitude in pursuing labour reforms and advocating a policy of hire and fire. The condition of State finances would also be taken up during the session.

The meeting was attended by Somnath Chatterjee, S. Ramachandran Pillai, Basudeb Acharia, Rupchand Pal and Nilotpal Basu (all CPI-M), J. Chittaranjan and Ajay Chakraborty (both CPI), Abani Roy (RSP) and Birsingh Mahato (AIFB).
