Cong. activists lay siege to Collectorate

By Our Staff Reporter

ONGOLE FEB. 17. Youth Congress activists led by their district president, Gorrepati Srinivas Rao, here on Monday laid a siege to the district Collectorate to protest against the alleged anti-people policies of the Centre and the State Government and their failure to rescue people from the onslaught of drought.

A large number of Youth Congress activists from different parts of the district came in a procession to the Collectorate from Miryalapalem centre and forced their way into the Collectorate which led to a heated argument between the policemen and the Youth Congress activists.

Going round the offices in the Collectorate the activists tried to convince the staff to strike work in support of their agitation. The activists for a while offered resistance when the police tried to evict them.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Srinivas Rao criticised the Government for failing to release adequate relief to rescue coolies and farmers who were rendered unemployed due to the long dry spell. He said people in villages were facing difficulties, as they did not have even drinking water.

Later, the activists staged a rasta roko in front of the Church Centre protesting against the arrest of their State president, T. Venkat Rao in Hyderabad.

Movement of vehicular traffic was affected for about an hour following the rasta roko.

The PCC secretary, K. Rajasekhar, the district Mahila Congress president, Narasamma, and others participated in the procession and rasta roko.
