Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
According to the proposal submitted by N.S. Srinivasan, advisor to the State Government, this stretch was selected considering the heavy traffic during the peak hours. Museum road will be made one-way from L.M.S. Junction to the Museum east gate intersection. The road behind the Public Office complex will be one way from Museum east gate intersection to the Public Library intersection. Thus vehicles from Vellayambalam will have to turn left at the Museum east gate intersection and those from Nanthancode road will have to turn left at the western gate. By providing suitable traffic islands to channelise the vehicles, traffic can be regulated without policemen, the proposal says. At present Museum road is a two-way from L.M.S. Junction to Vellayambalam junction and the western arm of the L.M.S. Junction is one-way in the inbound direction to the intersection. The stretch between L.M.S. intersection and V.J.T. Hall intersection on the M.G. Road also is one-way. All other roads in the area have two-way traffic movements at present. Following the rapid increase in the number of vehicles, there has been a consequent rise in the traffic on the city roads. But the improvements of the road system have not been on pace with volume of traffic, resulting in congestion, accidents and pollution. Practical solutions can be achieved by streamlining the traffic, the scheme said. Management techniques have proved to be a cost effective solution to problems in the cities. The main objective is to maximise the use of the existing street system and improve road safety. The immediate concern is to reorient the traffic pattern so that the conflict between vehicles and road users can be reduced. Alterations to traffic lanes, islands, restriction on turning movements, curbs on loading and unloading and parking regulation are inevitable, the proposal said.
