Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
The arrest was made to foil participation of the youth brigade in demonstrations to protest against the policies of the Centre and the TDP Government in response to the all-India party's call. At a press conference later, the AP Youth Congress president, T.Venkat Rao, the APCC joint secretary, Shabbir Ali, and a newcomer to the party, L.Rajagopal, criticised the arrest and lathicharge on partymen in different parts of the State by the police. They described the alleged unleashing of police terror and preventive arrest at Gandhi Bhavan as `undemocratic' and `inhuman', even while the party activists were set to picket the Ranga Reddy Collectorate. The leaders alleged that many partymen were detained on the city outskirts and their vehicles seized. Mr. Venkat Rao asked the partymen to `gherao' and stage protests before the State Ministers wherever possible to give the message that they had lost the moral right to enjoy power after the Government failed to meet the people's basic needs like water, both for drinking and irrigation. The Congress leaders objected to the arrest on the ground that the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, during a recent surprise visit, had himself asked his partymen to gherao officials for non-performance. Keeping this in view, why should the police prevent the Youth Congress from protesting gainst the faulty policies of the governments, they wondered. The APCC president, M.Satyanarayan Rao, the CLP leader, Y.S.Rajasekhar Reddy, Renuka Choudhary, MP, Sabita Indra Reddy, and A.Vivekananda Reddy, MLAs, Shabbir Ali and Rajagopal were among those who took part in the picketing.
