Fourteen naxals surrender

HYDERABAD Feb. 18. Fourteen naxalites of various groups, a majority of whom joined the revolutionary movement at a tender age, surrendered before the DGP, P. Ramulu, here on Tuesday.

The surrendered naxals, including five women, observed that they chose to join the mainstream due to health-related problems and declining popularity of naxals among the public.

All of them hailed from and worked in north Telangana areas. Some of these surrendered naxals held important positions in their respective parties like Banka Srinivas (24) of Shameerpet in Warangal district, who joined People's War as a sympathiser and went on to become Jangaon Area Committee Secretary.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Srinivas said that he had decided to quit the party on health grounds. Lack of adequate number of weapons, declining relations with people and a sense of insecurity were the other factors which drove him away from extremism, he said.

Thuotu Sadaiah (20) of Gopalapuram in Karimnagar district joined as PW Khammam `Military Platoon' member in July, 2000 and was elevated as deputy commander of `A' Section. He said that he joined the PW due to financial problems.

Rayaparthy Yakanta (20) of Thammadapally village in Warangal district was attracted towards PW ideology through Jana Natya Mandali songs.

She joined the group in 1998 and became member of Nallamala Forest Area Production Unit in July, 2002.

The DGP announced that all the 14 surrendered naxals would be given an immediate financial assistance of Rs. 5,000 each.

Replying to a question, Mr. Ramulu announced that the police department would recommend to the Government to impose a ban on the Janashakthi group in the backdrop of its increased violent activities. "Ban is imperative if they continue violence,'' he said.

The other surrendered naxals are Gandharla Sambaiah (20), Eka Sambaiah (25), Dandu Vasantha (16), P. Suvarna (16), Challa Bhaskar (18), M. Pani (27), P. Bakkaaih (22), D. Laxmi (16), K. Raji Reddy (45), and M. Dharma Raju (16).
