MPs back cricket team

NEW DELHI FEB. 18. The beleaguered Indian cricket team, at the receiving end from rival teams and supporters alike, today received support from an unlikely place — Parliament. Support for the team, came from MPs cutting across party lines, in the Lok Sabha this morning.

The House also condemned attempts to vandalise the houses of some of the players and urged the Government to provide adequate security to the family members.

Priyaranjan Dasmunshi (Cong.) set the ball rolling during the zero hour by referring to attempts in Allahabad to vandalise the house of Mohd. Kaif, a member of the current team.

Making an impassioned defence of the players, Mr. Dasmunshi, who, incidentally is also the president of the All India Football Federation, urged the irate fans to remember that these very players had brought glory to the nation in the past.

The veteran CPI (M) leader, Somnath Chatterjee, a great sports buff, also echoed Mr. Dasmunshi's sentiments. He deplored attempts to harass and intimidate the family members of the players.

Summing up the sentiments of the House, the Lok Sabha Speaker, Manohar Joshi, called on the Government to ensure full protection to the family members of the cricketers.
