`Chalo Hyderabad' by CITU on Feb. 26

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Feb. 19. In protest against what it alleged `efforts of the Government' for closing down the primary agricultural cooperative societies (PACS), the State committee of the Centre for Indian Trade Union will organise a `chalo Assembly' programme on February 26.

A decision to this effect was taken at the 9th state committee meeting of the CITU held at Mahbubnagar town from February 16 to 18. The `chalo Assembly' would involve the workers in the cooperative sector as well as from the farming community dependent on the district cooperative central banks (DCCBs) and culminate in a public meeting in the city the same day.

Disclosing this to reporters at a press conference here on Wednesday, the general secretary of the CITU state committee, S. Veeraiah, alleged that the Government was trying to close the PACS at the behest of the World Bank and release Rs. 35 crore for the purpose. "The AP State Cooperative Bank and a number of other cooperative institutions are listed in the second phase of the action plan of the public sector reform programme aimed at privatising the public sector undertakings,'' he said.

On other programmes proposed by the CITU, he said it would organise picketing of district collectorates on February 24. This would be followed by seminars and submission of memoranda to Collectors in all the districts from March 1 to 15.

Bank staff protest

The Sahakara Parirakshana Committee, a conglomerate of several cooperative bank employees' associations, has decided to take out a "chalo Assembly'' rally on March 7 to protest against the Government's moves to `kill' the cooperative system in the State.
