U.S. slaps sanctions on Indian firm

WASHINGTON FEB. 19. The United States today slapped punitive sanctions on an Indian company, NEC Engineers Private Ltd, for alleged sales of chemical and biological weapons.

The State Department identified an individual, Hans Raj Shiv, as well as the company and its sucessor firms. But neither Shiv nor the firm are now based in India. They are believed to be operating in the Middle East and Central Asia.

``The United States Government has determined that (these) two foreign persons have engaged in chemical/biological weapons proliferation activities that require the imposition of sanctions,'' the Department said in a notice published in today's Federal Register, a government gazette.

The Federal Register notice did not say what country or countries Shiv and NEC Engineers had sold proscribed items to, but in July, the United States imposed sanctions on Shiv for alleged sales under a law that prohibits transfers of chemical and germ warfare agents to Iran and Iraq. — AFP
