CHENNAI FEB. 19. The Indian Coach Factory (ICF) is rectifying the defects pointed out by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, in EMU coaches supplied by the factory for the Multi Model Transport System (MMTS) in Andhra Pradesh.

The Chief Minister, who inspected the coaches recently, expressed his dissatisfaction over the design and pointed out some defects. He directed officials to return the coaches to the ICF.

Sources in the ICF here said the Andhra Pradesh Government had placed orders for nine rakes, each consisting of six coaches. The ICF dispatched three rakes to Hyderabad last month and the Chief Minister, who inspected one of the rakes, had pointed out that the coaches were not up to his satisfaction. The sources said the Chief Minister's comment was taken in the right spirit and the defects would be rectified. As government officials they could not react to the Chief Minister's comment.

In fact, the EMU rakes were inspected by the Minister of State for Railways, Bandaru Dattareya, before they were dispatched to Hyderabad. The Minister, satisfied with the design and other passenger amenities provided in the coaches, announced a cash award to workers for their "excellent" work.

This was the first time that the ICF was getting a complaint as its workmanship was of high standard, though it might not be of international standard.

For the Andhra Pradesh coaches, the ICF used stainless steel for internal furnishing instead of fibreglass being used worldwide. Unlike fibreglass, it was difficult to shape the stainless steel rod. Regarding safety aspects, they said the factory had made it foolproof and nobody could find fault with it. After rectifying the defects, the ICF would invite the officials from Andhra Pradesh for an inspection of all the three rakes before returning them. Meanwhile, the fourth rake was getting ready which would be delivered along with the three rakes. The remaining five rakes would be supplied before March this year, the sources added.
