The incident came to light when the villagers stumbled on the putrefied remains of the simians in a coconut grove yesterday, the Veliyam panchayat president, C. Raju, said. About 50 monkeys were suspected to have been poisoned by miscreants, as the animals used to come down in batches from the hills and vandalise farmsteads in the village. A tiny one separated from its mother was saved by a village woman. Forest and Wildlife authorities had been informed of the incident, Mr. Raju said. Villagers said uncontrolled quarrying in Maruthimala had threatened the habitat of monkeys forcing them to come down to hamlets at the foothills in search of food. PTI
