India protests harassment of diplomat by Pak.

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD Feb.19 . Even before the ink on the visa stamp of the new chiefs of the missions in New Delhi and Islamabad has dried, Pakistan and India are at it again.

Hours after Pakistan accused the Indian intelligence agencies of harassing officers of its military wing in New Delhi and their families, India today lodged two protests objecting to the ``aggressive tailing and harassment'' of its Defence Attaché, R.K. Karwal, by the Pakistani Intelligence agencies.

The acting Charge d'Affaires, Vikram Misri, said that the High Commission had sent two ``note verbales'' to the Pakistan Foreign Office, protesting the harassment suffered by Brig. Karwal at the hands of the personnel of intelligence agencies.

He said that today's protest notes were in addition to the one sent on February 13 complaining that Brig. Karwal was being subjected to ``aggressive surveillance'', similar to that experienced by the former Charge d'Affaires, Sudhir Vyas, two weeks ago, before his expulsion along with four other staffers of the mission.

India alleged that Brig. Karwal was followed very closely in an ``intimidating fashion'' during the past few weeks. Today, his vehicle was blocked several times by the vehicles of intelligence agencies that followed him while he was returning from a moneychanger.

On Tuesday, the Associated Press of Pakistan, the official news agency, alleged in a report that the Indian intelligence agencies continued to harass Pakistan's diplomatic staff.
