Haryana
By Our Special Correspondent
According to an official spokesman, the Haryana police had initiated concerted steps to curb this menace by launching awareness drives at all levels to sensitise the public by organising police-public meetings at various places. The police had also organized three national seminars on subjects such as `Sexual harassment at workplace', `Female foeticide--causes and solutions' and `Domestic violence'. The Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court along with a number of judges, senior police and civil officers and intellectuals had participated in these seminars. The Haryana police had also launched various operations to check crime and nab criminals. Villages were adopted up to sub-division level. All women police cells were set up at range levels. More than 200 women police constables were recruited during this period and 200 more would be recruited shortly. The spokesman added that the Director-General of Police, M.S.Malik, had already directed the field officers to take prompt action in cases like molestation, assault, rape and dowry deaths. They had also been instructed not to call the women to the police station for investigation. A high-level monitoring cell is working at Police Headquarters under the supervision of a DIG level officer.
