`Jayalalithaa mentioned U.S. gift in IT returns'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI FEB. 19 . The AIADMK leader, Jayalalithaa, received during 1992-93 Rs. 77,52,591 in U.S. dollars as gift by way of a demand draft. The receipt was shown by in her income-tax returns, the investigating officer (IO) in the "disproportionate wealth case" against her told a special court today.

During cross-examination before special judge-I, R. Rajamanickam, defence counsel asked N. Nallamma Naidu, a retired Superintendent of Police, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, whether he was aware of the Centre's "Amnesty Scheme" in 1992-93. The IO replied in the negative.

During the same year, N. Sasikalaa, cited as the second accused, also received U.S dollars valued at Rs. 51,47,951, as gift. The accused mentioned the amount in her income-tax returns.

Mr. Naidu said Namadhu MGR, a newspaper, was a firm in which Ms. Jayalalithaa and Ms. Sasikalaa were partners. He was not aware that it was an AIADMK organ.

During investigation, he read the newspaper. But he did not know whether it was associated with the party. He said the daily was a separate entity.

When counsel asked him whether the partnership deed of the newspaper had been filed before the court, Mr. Naidu said he did not know. However, he remembered having seen the document. The newspaper was started prior to July 1, 1991. But the amount in the newspaper's current account with the Mylapore branch of the Canara Bank as on July 1, 1991 was not given in the statement submitted to the court.

The witness agreed with counsel when he pointed out that Vidayasagar, a bank official and prosecution witness, had deposed that the balance as on June 30, 1991 was Rs. 5,51,826.94. Mr. Naidu said the "statement of accounts" between July 1, 1991 and April 30, 1996 had been filed in the court.

The IO said though he had examined the newspaper's manager, Balaji, and obtained his statement, he was not examined as a witness.
