Veerappan cornered in MM Hills: DGP

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI FEB. 19. The forest brigand, Veerappan, has been cornered in the Mudumalai Hills area with all escape routes sealed by the Special Task Force personnel of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, R. Rajagopalan, Director-General of Police, has said. "The flow of information about his movements is now better. The police have won the confidence of tribals, who are volunteering to divulge vital clues on Veerappan's hideouts," he told presspersons here today. Intensive combing operations were on in select pockets. Ruling out the possibility of the fugitive striking again, he said the joint operation would soon be a success. An exchange of fire in the forest recently was not with the Veerappan gang and was a wrong alarm, he said.

`No need for Central forces'

Dr. Rajagopalan, who reviewed security arrangements in Sattankulam for the Assembly byelection scheduled for February 26, said there was no need for Central forces, as more than 1,400 personnel were deployed. Vigil in sensitive pockets had been enhanced with police pickets and night patrolling. In a bid to minimise the number of crimes against women, there was a plan to deploy women constables, attached to the Tamil Nadu Special Police battalions, in police stations. Dr. Rajagopalan earlier called on a Striking Force constable, Gopi (26), injured in a mishap during a security exercise in Sattankulam yesterday. The victim was being treated for spinal problems and the Government would bear the expenses, he said.
