According to eyewitnesses, the Congress functionaries, from Krishnagiri in Dharmapuri district, were conducting door-to-door canvassing, when a group warned the `outsiders' to vacate the village immediately as some of its `friends' were asked to leave Nazareth, where the first attack took place in the wee hours of Tuesday. In the argument that ensued between the two groups, the Congress cadres were reportedly thrashed in full view of the villagers. Infuriated at the incidents, the Pillaivilai villagers sounded the church bell and assembled on the Nazareth-Tiruchendur Highway. Condemning the attack, the villagers, along with the Congressmen, staged a road roko, disrupting traffic on the Nazareth - Tiruchendur Highway for about 30 minutes. Though the police received a petition from the Congress cadres, no complaint was registered. The police also said no road roko was conducted on the Highway.
