Traders' hartal today

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Feb. 19. The Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy (KVVES) has called upon the traders to close shops and take out a march to the Assembly on Thursday in protest against the Government decision to implement value-added tax (VAT) in the State.

The samithy district president, Peringamala Ramachandran, and the general secretary, Y. Vijayan, told presspersons here today that the march is being held as the Government is piloting the Bill on VAT in the Assembly on Thursday.

The samithy demanded the Government to repeal the Bill. It urged medical shop and hotel owners to down the shutters and join the protest.

But the leaders clarified that they would not forcefully close the shops.

The march would begin from Gandhi Park maidan at 11 a.m. The leaders would present a memorandum to the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, and the Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan.

VAT would spell doom on the smallscale traders. This would lead to price hike of essentials, they said.
