State given time to file counter on new airport

By Our Legal Correspondent

HYDERABAD FEB. 19. The State Government was given 10 days' time to file counter-affidavit in the writ petition filed challenging the move to set up international airport in the vicinity of Himayat Sagar, the major drinking water source for the State capital.

The Bench comprising the Acting Chief Justice, Motial.B.Naik, and the judge, Dalva Subrahmanyam, was hearing the writ petition filed by the Forum for Better Hyderabad, represented by its chairperson Captain J.Rama Rao. The writ petitioner complained that the airport was being set up in violation of the GO 111 issued by the State Government. The GO prohibits any polluting activity, including hotels, within a 10-km radius of drinking water lakes of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar. The writ petitioner recalled that the Supreme Court on an earlier occasion had struck down the action of the State Government which permitted an industry near Osman Sagar.

The Aadvocate-General appearing for the State Government sought time to file counter and the case is adjourned to March 3.
