SC to hear farmers' plea against Bhavani weir

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI Feb. 20. The Supreme Court will hear on Friday a writ petition filed by the Federation of Farmers Associations of Tamil Nadu, seeking a ban on construction of a check dam by Kerala, across the Bhavani near `Mukali' for diversion of water outside the Cauvery basin.

The petition filed by the Federation president and former MP, K.P. Ramalingam, also sought an interim injunction on the Kerala Government from proceeding further with the construction.

The petitioner said the Federation representing 20 lakh farmers, was concerned over the proposed construction.

The check dam and canals were intended to divert water to provide supply to the proposed factory of a multinational cola giant and to take water outside the river basin for generation of electricity.

The Centre had not cleared the project and the environmental impact assessment had also not been done.

But, all of a sudden Kerala had started construction with the help of a strong police force.
