Diseased politics

Sir, — Sunil Dutta, in his article `A diseased politics' (Feb. 20) has rightly said that Jinnah's `Islam in danger' campaign during 1940-46 created Pakistan. The spectre of India paying a very heavy price if it did not reject the politics of extremism is bound to prove real against the background of communal hatred being propagated today by religious bigots supported covertly and overtly by politicians to serve their own vested interests. While `Islam in danger' did create Pakistan then, the slogan `Hinduism in danger' now is heading towards creating another Pakistan within India.

K.R. Manohara,

Chitradurga, Karnataka

Sir, — I share Mr. Dutta's concern over religious extremism which had resulted in our country's partition and now it has again played havoc with our secular democratic system with certain fundamentalist forces trying to score a victory by pitting the Hindus against the Muslims. No religion, as proclaimed by selfish political leaders, is ever in danger and no political leader can save it. It is only their lust for power that makes them use religion for achieving their political ends.

K.L. Batra,

New Delhi
