No CRPF for T.N. bypoll

NEW DELHI FEB. 21. The Election Commission has rejected the Congress' demand for deploying the CRPF for the February 26 Sattankulam byelection in Tamil Nadu.

A Congress delegation had submitted a memorandum to the Commission on Wednesday stating that in view of fear of "largescale violence" during the poll, the CRPF be deployed to ensure a free and fair election. However, Commission sources said that as a general practice, Central forces were not used for byelections and no special circumstances existed in this case also, warranting any change in the practice.
