Govt. committed to promoting education: Advani

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI Feb. 22. The Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, today reiterated the Government's commitment to promoting health and education and said it fully endorsed the views of the Nobel laureate, Amartya Sen, that even while economic progress was important, it was essential to focus on improving the health and education status of the people.

In this context, he recalled the recent address of the President, A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, to the joint session of Parliament.

Dr. Kalam had announced that the Government would launch a major cleanliness drive in the country in active partnership with citizens' organisations, considering that improvement in the standard of sanitation was essential to reduce diseases, especially among children and the poor.

Mr. Advani was speaking at a function where an NGO — Sulabh International — presented an award to the World Health Organisation.

The Head of WHO's South East Asia Region, Uton Muchtar Rafei, received the award on behalf of its Director-General, Gro Harlem Brundtland.

The award carries $50,000, a gold plaque, a gold medal and a citation.
