Thengadi declines Padma award

New Delhi Feb. 22. The RSS ideologue, Dattopant Bapurao Thengadi, has declined to accept the Padma Bhushan award saying he was not qualified to accept an honour for a task whose credit went to the RSS founding fathers, Guru Golwalker and K.B. Hedgewar.

While thanking the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, for the honour bestowed on him and expressing his admiration for him, Mr. Thengadi, in a letter, said he was not qualified to receive the honour for a work whose foundations were laid by the two RSS stalwarts, Sangh sources said.

Both Guru Golwalker and Hedgewar deserved to be honoured with the Bharat Ratna, Mr. Thengadi, founder of the RSS-affiliated Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh as also Swadeshi Jagran Manch, said. When contacted, the RSS joint spokesman, Ram Madhav, said: ``he (Thengadi) is a very senior leader. We respect his sentiments.'' — PTI
