Victims of police

Sir, — Your Editorial, `The trials of undertrials' (Feb. 19), speaks boldly of the violation of human rights of the accused by the police. I do agree with it but what about the cases where the police favour the accused and see the victim with contempt.

One of my friends was tortured by her in-laws mentally and physically and she lodged a complaint with the police. But instead of taking action against the in-laws, the police blamed the poor girl for her predicament. Why aren't the police rebuked in such cases and what about those thousands of NGOs working for women? The whole system seems to be taking the side of the culprits.

I hope such biased and unsympathetic attitude of the police is also brought to light.

Alwar, Rajasthan
