Letters to the Editor
Sir, This has reference to your Editorial "Unaddressed concerns" (Feb. 21). It is regrettable that India, which has championed many international causes in the past, is keeping a low profile with regard to the U.S.-Iraq standoff. It is unfortunate that the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, and the former External Affairs Minister, Jaswant Singh, instead of supporting the stand of France and Germany on the issue, should have made vague statements "we are against war anywhere" in Parliament and the media, which, no doubt, were meant to please the sole superpower. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the U.S., utilising the vacuum, gained the upper hand in deciding the fate of other nations unilaterally, using the U.N. as a tool. Multilateralism, therefore, is the only way to check this. The NAM countries, which are meeting in Kuala Lumpur now, ought to play an important role along with Russia, China, France and Germany in forging a strong front or axis.
C.A.C. Murugappan,
