According to the police, raw materials and unfinished match sticks caught fire during the process of grinding of sulphur inside the unit located in Goodanagaram area. On seeing the fire, five girl workers locked themselves inside the bathroom. Rishiya (17), Jaya (19), and Jothi (15), died of suffocation while the other two girls were admitted to the Gudiyatham Government Hospital. Koteeswari (16) who was in a serious condition has been referred to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital. Twelve workers sustained burn injuries while trying to run away. The District Collector, A.C. Mohandoss and N. Rajasekharan, SP, rushed to the spot and supervised the relief operations.
