SATTANKULAM Feb. 24 . The Congress has alleged that an attempt was made today to attack its candidate in the Sattankulam Assembly byelection, A. Mahendran, but his driver, who intervened, received the blow and was admitted to hospital, hours before the campaign ended in the constituency.

Following the incident, Congress volunteers, led by the TNCC working president, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, staged a road roko and then went in procession to the Sattankulam police station, where a complaint was lodged. Mr. Mahendran alleged that around 1 p.m. a group of AIADMK men came to attack him, but his driver, trying to protect him, was injured.
