The car involved in the road accident hit a road sign before falling into a gutter near Bijapur on Monday.
Mr. Shivakumar, who was first admitted to the BLDE Medical College Hospital here, was airlifted to Bangalore. Three Congressmen, Anil Patil, Hubli councillor, Satish Meharwade of Hubli, and Narendraswami Malavalli, a follower of Mr. Shivkumar, were also injured in the accident. Mr. Narendraswami, who suffered injuries in his head and back, was shifted to Bangalore along with the Minister. They were treated at NIMHANS. Soon after the accident that occurred at 12.30 a.m., near Jamkhandi Cross, the injured were rushed to the BLDE Medical College Hospital in an escort vehicle. The Minister was taken to Ashwini Children's Hospital for a CT scan. Besides some scratches on the forehead, nose and cheek, he suffered an injury in his left leg. L.H. Bidari, head of the Ashwini Hospital, told The Hindu that the Minister was out of danger. He had suffered a concussion and would be kept under observation for two days. Meanwhile, the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, who arrived here on a two-day visit to the district this afternoon, called on Mr. Shivkumar. The Minister, who had participated in various functions organised at Jamkhandi, Rabkavi and Teradal in Bagalkot district till late night, was going to Humnabad (Bidar dt.), when the accident occurred. He was scheduled to return to Bangalore by Kittur Express. However, he was asked by the party leaders to go to Humnabad for electioneering. He left Teradal, 85 km away from here, at around 10.30 p.m. Instead of travelling by the official car, he boarded a car that belonged to Mr. Anil Patil. Mr. Patil, who is the Floor leader of the Congress in Hubli-Dharward City Corporation, was at the wheel. The Minister planned to break his journey at Bijapur before going to Humnabad via Solapur. The car hit a road sign before falling into a gutter. Police had a tough time in controlling the stream of visitors at the BLDE Hospital. As news of the accident spread, a large number of Congressmen thronged the hospital ward. Later, the injured were shifted to the NRI Guest House before being airlifted to Bangalore. The Minister for Agriculture Marketing, B.S. Patil Sasanur, visited Mr. Shivkumar.
