22,000 houses to be built for slum dwellers

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Feb. 25. The State Cabinet today approved the construction of over 22,000 houses for the poor under the Valmiki Ambedkar Housing Scheme for slum dwellers.

The Minister for Information, Kagodu Thimmappa, briefing presspersons after the Cabinet meeting, said the Government had to hurriedly prepare an action plan and submit it to the Centre to avail itself of the 50 per cent Central subsidy. Under the scheme, the Centre and the State equally shared the cost of construction of houses and community toilets for slum dwellers.

As per the plan, the State Government, through the Karnataka Slum Welfare Board, would construct 11,000 houses and 240 community toilets during the current year at a cost of Rs. 57 crore and 50 per cent of the amount would be borne by the Union Government.

The State Government would increase its share of investment by taking a loan from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation.

Around 1,000 houses and 20 toilets would be constructed at Bagalkot for the welfare of the poor who were displaced by the construction of the Alamatti Dam.

Mr. Thimmappa said the State would construct 11,970 houses and 272 community toilets under the Valmiki Ambedkar Housing Scheme in the coming year at a cost of Rs. 64 crore.

The Cabinet also decided to waive the one per cent market cess on gherkins to enable higher exports.

Mr. Thimmappa said the Cabinet approved the Governor's address to the joint session of the Legislature. The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, would address the legislature on Thursday. The Cabinet, however, did not finalise the date for the presentation of the State Budget.
