V.P. Singh moots all-religion research centre at Ayodhya

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI FEB. 25. The former Prime Minister, V.P. Singh, today suggested setting up of an all-religion research institute in Ayodhya, instead of handing over the land to any party to the dispute.

``Undisputed land cannot be handed over to any party to the dispute, since it would only complicate the matter,'' Mr. Singh said at a press conference here.

At the institute serious study could be undertaken based on all religions, Mr. Singh said. It could house religious books and allow scholars to bring out the common thread in all religions. After a thorough study, the scholars could present before the nation what religion taught them and show a way.

Mr. Singh said that in 1990, when he was the Prime Minister, an offer was made to the VHP to take the undisputed area with the rider that they did not spread towards the site where the Babri Masjid stood. However, it was rejected, he added.

Meanwhile, Shivendra Pratap Sahi, who was present at the press conference claimed that he was the manager/sarwrahkar of the Sri Raj Rajeshwari Sitaram Trust, which owned over 600 acres including the area being claimed by the VHP. Mr. Sahi said the Supreme Court had permitted him to implead in the case to be heard on March 6.
