Tehelka panel to resume hearing on Feb. 28

By J. Venkatesan

NEW DELHI Feb. 25. S.N. Phukan, retired Supreme Court judge heading the Tehelka Commission of Inquiry, will hold his first public hearing in the case on February 28 to hear the views of lawyers on whether to continue the probe from where K. Venkataswami left.

Soon after Mr. Justice Phukan took over as Chairman of the Commission last month, he met Mr. Justice Venkataswami (who resigned from that post in November last) in Chennai and ascertained from him the progress of the inquiry regarding the expose made by the Tehelka portal.

Commission sources told The Hindu that Mr. Phukan would hold his meeting on Friday to hear the views of counsel for the parties as to whether recording of evidence had to be done afresh or the earlier depositions could be utilised.

At the time when Mr. Justice Venkataswami left, the ``draft'' report concerning past defence transactions was almost ready.
