Though the BSNL had the capacity to provide mobile service to 8,000 subscribers in the district, only 3,500 persons had subscribed to it. He hoped that the service would be popular, with the BSNL offering free incoming calls for pre-paid and post-paid customers. There was no shortage of SIM cards. Mr. Subbaramaiah said chordial-based technology would be adopted in Karwar, Kumta, Honnavar, and Sea Bird Project area by the end of March. Stating that there were only 1,230 Internet accounts in the district, he said all educational institutions were likely to get Internet facility under the new policy of the Union Government. On rural telephone connections, he said WLL technology would replace the cable-laying method. Mr. Subbaramaiah said the revenue of the BSNL in the district was Rs. 2.9 crore a month.
