`New STF strategies will help nab brigand'

By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR FEB. 26. The Home Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, said here on Wednesday that the new strategies adopted by the Special Task Force would help it nab the forest brigand, Veerappan.

Addressing presspersons, he said that in the past, STF personnel used to return to the base after a day's search in forests. But now, bases were set up deeper in the forests, so that the search could be maintained at night. Soligars and other tribal inhabitants of forests were now emboldened to share information on the brigand's moves with the STF. They were helpful in guiding the forces on paths in forests. Mr. Kharge said at the recent conference on internal security held in New Delhi that the Union Government was asked by the States to increase its share of the expenditure incurred in modernising police forces to 75 per cent from 50 per cent. The Centre was expected to release an additional Rs. 50 crore for improvement of prisons under a similar scheme. The Home Minister said top priority would be given to creating a posse of 200 policewomen.

Reiterating his commitment to safeguard the system of holding CET for admissions to professional colleges, Mr. Kharge said: "The CET will be saved even if the Government has to amend the laws to bypass the Supreme Court's verdict in the matter of admissions. Everyone in the Government is keen on providing justice to meritorious students among the poor and weaker sections."

To a question, he said there were lotteries in all States in one form or the other. However, the Department of Finance would see if there was any need to control online lotteries, he added.
