'Autonomy key issue for National Conference'

By Our Staff Reporter

Jammu Feb. 26. The leader of the National Conference in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Ghulam Mohhiuddin Shah, today said autonomy for the State would remain a political issue for his party and any peace mission formed should take notice of this.

Speaking to The Hindu here, Mr. Shah said, "We have nothing against any peace initiative in the State and we welcome any proposal of the Government to bring peace."

Criticising the Centre for having appointed a retired bureaucrat as the new negotiator on Kashmir he said, "In the past, people with political background had been appointed as the interlocutor. K.C. Pant and Arun Jaitley have a political background. But this time a bureaucrat has been appointed as the interlocutor.

"We have nothing personal against N.N. Vohra but any person to have been appointed to chart out a political settlement needs the requisite background," he said.
