Autonomy to some engg. colleges likely

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM FEB. 26. The State Government would go ahead with its proposal to grant autonomy to certain engineering colleges and polytechnics in the State.

Announcing the deatils of the proposal in the State Assembly during question hour today, Nalakathu Soopy, Minister for Education, said the Government had an open mind in this regard and was prepared to give ample consideration to the views of the Opposition.

A society would be formed for each of the institutions being considered for autonmous status and its members would be nominated by the Government. A governing council headed by an expert either from the industry or from the academic field, would manage the affairs of each institution. There would also be representatives of the AICTE and the State Government in the governing council, Mr. Soopy said.

For a period of five years, they would be provided finanacial assistance of which 70 per cent would be in the form of grant and the rest as loan. However, at the end of this term, they would be required to attain a sound financial status.
