GUNTUR FEB. 26. The IV Additional District Judge (of the special court for trying atrocities against SCs and STs) of Guntur, N. Balayogi, sentenced 10 persons with life imprisonment for attempting to commit murder and abusing three Dalits, including an ex-serviceman, with their caste name.

According to prosecution, K. Bhaskara Rao, P. Koteswara Rao, P. Nageswara Rao, M. Somaiah, M. Soma Raju, M. Rama Rao, O. Srinivasa Rao, O. Kondalu and O. Somaiah of Kommanaboinavaripalem and K. Krishna Murthy of Vallurivaripalem attacked S. Nageswara Rao, D. Subba Rao and N. Sangita Rao on March 22, 2000 and abused them in foul language using their caste name.

S. Nageswara Rao, who retired from armed forces in 1989 was allotted 4.18 acres of land by the Government for cultivation at Vallurivaripalem on the outskirts of Kommanaboinavaripalem. The accused persons used to use a route through the land allotted to Mr. Nageswara Rao to reach their farm fields. After Mr. Nageswara Rao began cultivating the land, they wanted him to make way for them to which the ex-serviceman objected. Nursing a grievance against him, the accused persons went in a tractor to the farm fields of Mr. Nageswara Rao on March 22, 2000 when he was cutting toddy trees with the help of D. Subba Rao and N. Sangita Rao.

They attacked Mr. Nageswara Rao and stabbed him on his head and shoulder and inflicted stab injuries on D. Subba Rao. Fearing for safety, Sangita Rao fled the scene. Later, the accused persons took the toddy leaves and logs, cut by Mr. Nageswara Rao and his associates, in the tractor and left the place.

Following a complaint from Mr. Nageswara Rao, in the Bapatla rural police station, the then Bapatla DSP, K.V. Chandra Rao, took up the investigation. As the guilt of the accused was established, the judge sentenced them with life imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 13,000 under different sections. The Special Public Prosecutor, Kidambi Srinivasa Ramanujam, conducted the prosecution.
