Agriculture dept. gearing for annual flower show

Pondicherry Feb. 26. The Department of Agriculture in collaboration with the government sponsored Agro Services and Industries Corporation and a few other organisations and farmers outfits is going ahead with arrangements to hold a three-day annual flower show on the sprawling site of Indira Gandhi Sports complex at Uppalam near here from February 28.

Briefing newsmen on the flower show at the venue today, the Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam said that in addition to the government departments as many as 80 stalls by the farmers and private organisations would also be put up at the fair.

The purpose of the flower vegetable and fruit show was to provide entertainment to the people interested in aesthetic values and also for children. Farmers would be kept abreast of changing scenario in the system of cultivation and the production technologies. Farm equipment and machines would also be on show.

Mr. Namassivayam said normally the flower show had been held in the century old Botanical Garden. But a committee constituted by the government recommended that no such fairs be held in the garden as the rare species and varieties of plants and trees in the garden would be damaged. Hence the venue had been shifted to the sports complex this year.

The total expenditure for the fair is Rs 30 lakhs and admission would be free.

There would be demonstration on new system of storage of grains by certain agencies.
