Action plan to end mosquito menace

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Feb. 26. With the complaints of mosquito menace pouring in from several areas in Pondicherry, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy convened a meeting of officials of the Departments of Public Works, Local Administration and Health to evolve an action plan to combat mosquitoes. He told newsmen today that a Rs 32-lakh scheme to remove the silt and garbage from main canals running across the city and also in Uppanar canal had been launched. Work was on as an immediate measure to relieve the citizens of the mosquito problem.

He denied there was a spurt in incidents of chicken pox. Only mumps had been reported sporadically from different areas and nearly 15 cases had been known to be cases of mumps so far.

He agreed with the suggestion of a reporter that voluntary organisations and service units should also be associated with the task of eradicating mosquitoes.

He said that municipal bodies and commune panchayats had been asked to eradicate mosquitoes.

The PWD Chief Engineer, P. P. Srinivasan and his team of officials, the Director of Health and Family Welfare Services, Thamma Rao and Executive Engineer of the Port Department C.Anandane were also present at press conference.

Chief Minister said normally in the months of February and March there would be increase in mosquito density . However without leaving anything to chance the departments concerned with public health had been going ahead jointly in launching the massive anti-mosquito drive.

HC order on admission

Mr.Rangasamy said that the Administration received a fax message from its pleader in Madras High court that an interim order of the court on a writ petition preferred by some private medical colleges on quota of admission of students for 2002-2003 in the colleges here pointed out that Pondicherry Government was permitted to sponsor candidates through centralised Admission committee for 40 per cent of the total seats in the colleges. The remaining seats were meant for managements.

Mr. Rangasamy said that based on this the administration had scheduled to hold selection test through the committee on March 5.
