Slippers hurled at mediapersons

By Our Tamil Nadu Bureau

Sattankulam Feb. 26. Slippers and stones were hurled at a group of mediapersons, who attempted to take pictures of alleged "bogus voters'' at Vellarikkaoorani near Nazareth during the Assembly byelection in the constituency today.

When about 10 lensmen and scribes descended on the village on hearing complaints of bogus-voting, they were greeted with footwear and stones by members of a political party.

As the police on duty tried to chase away the mediapersons, they sat in a dharna near the polling station.

After a while, the Central Election observer, V.P.Raja, asked the police to detain those who attacked the presspersons.

Later, the police whisked away five persons, including Agri Perumal, AIADMK's labour wing functionary, to the Nazareth police station.

They were let off in the evening.

Mr. Perumal maintained that he had not attacked any mediaperson, but only objected to the entry of a functionary of a Congress-affiliated union into the polling station.
