IOB clinches title

GIDHARBAHA (PUNJAB) FEB. 26. Harihara Sudan came up with two three-pointers in the climax to clinch a thrilling 78-75 victory for Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), Chennai, over host Punjab Police in the final of the fourth Raja Porus all-India basketball tournament at the Baba Gangaram Stadium here on Wedensday.

IOB had enjoyed a slender 72-71 lead with 50-odd seconds for the hooter, when Harihara did the trick for the Chennai team, even as the home crowd rooted hard for the policemen. It was 75-75 with Prithpal Singh converting the free throws, but IOB played the time out following Harihara Sudan's final three-pointer.

Though IOB trailed 38-44 at halftime, it had the confidence to spring back into the contest, having beaten its arch rival in a few competitions in recent times.

It was a close contest all the way to the wire, and IOB had 53-52 lead by the end of the third quarter. That forced the Chennai team's coach to press an indisposed Gopinath into service, in an attempt to strengthen the team's challenge.
