The BMP Commissioner, M.R.Sreenivas Murthy, had been persistently trying to get the new tenders approved. The new contracts, which were surrounded in a controversy, are likely to be implemented by the first week of April. Meanwhile, the BMP will start verification of vehicles owned by the new contractors, their documents and capacity as quoted in the tender documents. The new contractors would be given a month to arrange for cleaning equipment. The mobilisation orders would be issued shortly, the sources said. Of the 61 packages for which tenders were called, one package was disqualified, as it did not meet the technical requirements. The 60 packages were expected to cover 60 per cent of the BMP limits, the sources pointed out. The Government had not made any changes to the resolution approved by the BMP Council. The existing contractors (who were awarded work earlier) had approached the High Court for extension of their contract period. This had delayed the process of awarding fresh contracts even after the BMP Council's approval. A resolution seeking the Government's consent was sent two months ago.
