Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Special Correspondent
The seriously injured Keerthika (6) has been admitted to the Government General Hospital. The Villivakkam traffic enforcement sub-inspector, Rajendran, has been placed under suspension on charges of failure to enforce the court order banning movement of fishcarts. The Villivakkam traffic inspector, Abdul Hameed, has been transferred to the Armed Reserve. The JCP (Traffic), G.U.G. Sastry, warned that similar action would be taken against the traffic police officers if they failed to prohibit the movement of fishcarts in their jurisdiction. The police arrested the fishcart driver, Kumar of Villivakkam, and a hunt was on for the owner. Mr. Sastry said stern action was being taken by the police against fishcarts moving in some parts of the city despite the ban order. This year alone 52 cases had been registered. Fishcarts, which tend to sneak into the city from the neighbouring areas, would be siezed. Action would be taken against the owners, he said. It may be noted that fishcarts are found parked in the Saidapet vehicular subway even now. They operate in this area, passing the local police station, to cover Alandur Road, Jones Road and Jaffarkhanpet.
