This Day That Age
In Karachi on the 27th Mr. H.S. Suhrawardy appealed to the Government and the people of Pakistan to make common cause with India "in Pakistan's own interests." It was the second time he was speaking so within a week. Suhrawardy accused the rulers of Pakistan of having bungled in every sphere and said, "The old technique of bringing to the fore our dispute with India in trenchant terms is again being utilised to arouse fear in the people, in the hope that it will induce them to rally round Government. Our jute trade has been ruined by the discriminatory tax against India which has led India to grow its own jute increasingly and to look to East Pakistan for superior quality only. As regards food, we are nearing famine conditions. Seeds and canal waters are distributed discriminatorily due to power politics. But, owing to bungling, agriculturists have started selling their cattle and their lands. People in towns are starving and have taken to crime. Pakistan must live cooperatively with India to solve such problems."
